Eczema and Dermatitis Information And Treatment

Dermatitis before and after treatment with Dermalux.

Eczema is a general term for any type of dermatitis or “itchy rash” on the limbs, torso, face or scalp. There are several skin diseases that are classed as eczema. All types of eczema cause itching and redness and some will blister, weep or peel. Eczema typically affects the insides of the elbows, backs of the knees, and the face, but some eczema types can affect other parts of the body too.

Types of eczema include contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, Dyshidrotic Dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis (also known as dandruf) and Nummular Dermatitis. There are many more types of eczema and it is important to visit your doctor prior to coming to see us for treatment.

Dermatitis can be casued by a variety of things including yeast on the skin, contact with metals such as nickel, perfumed products, washing powders, fabrics such as wool, food allergies to name a few. It is best to try and work out the source of your dermatitis and avoid it in the future.

The irritation caused by dermatitis often leads to scratching which can make the condition worse. This is often controlled with steroids, both topical and oral. Though these drugs are effective, they can have side effects from prolonged use such as thinning of the skin. For this reason it is a good idea to find another solution to the itching and unpleasant appearance of dermatitis.

We use phototherapy treatment to reduce the visual appearance and symptoms of dermatitis conditions. Phototherapy stimulates the skin cells to repair and rejuvenate and can significantly improve eczema and other skin problems without the use of steroids or other medications. However, we can where necessary prescribe  medications to work alongside the phototherapy to give you results in the shortest time as possible. For ongoing chronic eczema you can manage the condition and reduce flare ups on an ongoing basis with phototherapy, and the treatment is completely safe and drug free.
