FSA head of incidents, Tina Potter said: “High levels of caffeine can cause anxiety, sleeplessness, agitation, palpitations, diarrhoea and restlessness, and individuals with a mental health condition can experience worsened psychosis. An urgent safety warning has been issued to Home Bargains shoppers after a popular health product was found to contain levels of caffeine which could kill. The discount store recalled the Sci-Mx Nutrition Ultra Muscle Strawberry Flavour last week warning it was unsafe to consume.

As a precautionary measure, Home Bargains took immediate action by removing all of the strawberry flavoured product from sale and implementing preventive measures across its tills to ensure their withdrawal. This action was followed by product recall posters being displayed in all stores. These batches contain excessive caffeine levels which poses a potentially serious food safety risk.Ultra Whey's versatility makes it a top choice for individuals with diverse fitness goals. Whether you're an athlete striving for peak performance, a runner looking to recover faster, or a weightlifter aiming to build lean muscle, Ultra Whey is the versatile solution you've been searching for. On discovery of the caffeine contamination issue following batch testing, we immediately alerted the UK Food Standards Agency. We have also issued an urgent product recall message via all our business to customer and internal business to business communication channels. No hype, no pseudo-science: what we say about our formulas is all in line with strict EU health claim regulations.

We use only premium ingredients and natural-tasting flavours, so every single one of our formulas tastes great and mixes well. The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. Our customer’s wellbeing is our number one priority, and we’ve continued to work with the FSA and the retailer to locate and obtain the affected products so they are no longer in circulation. Home Bargains is recalling a protein powder found to contain potentially lethal levels of caffeine.A Home Bargains spokeswoman said:“On Wednesday 5July Home Bargains were made aware, by the manufacturer, that it had been identified that some batches of their Sci-mx Ultra Muscle Strawberry Flavour 1.5kg, contain excessive caffeine levels, posing a food safety risk. The Food Standards Agency says Home Bargains is recalling this Sci-Mx Nutrition Ultra Muscle Strawberry Flavour because "high levels of caffeine have been found in the product", adding: "This makes the product unsafe to consume." Sci-Mx Ultra Muscle is a scientifically developed all-in-one formula which is ideal for those looking to develop and maintain quality muscle. We deeply regret the incident and sincerely apologise to all our customers. Whilst we believe the incident is isolated and limited only to the specific batches mentioned above, we will be rigorously reviewing the incident and our processes to ensure we retain the trust and confidence of our consumers. We continue to liaise with the UK Food Standards Agency in relation to the recall, and further information has been made available from the FSA at https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts.

The affected product comes in 1.5 kg bags and has a batch code of W110429. Its best before date is March 2025. The risk statement reads: "Too much caffeine can produce anxiety, sleeplessness, agitation, palpitations, diarrhoea and restlessness. Individuals with a mental health condition caffeine can experience worsened psychosis and result in the need for higher amounts of medication. Caffeine can reduce how well your antipsychotic medications work."If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). However the Food Standards Agency has now issued a fresh alert urging consumers to avoid the "potentially lethal" protein powder. It said: "The Food Standards Agency is urging consumers not to consume a recalled protein powder because it contains caffeine at levels that could be fatal. SCI-MX Nutrition is part of a bigger family. We are proud to be a division within the Samworth Brothers Group. The Food Standards Agency says Tesco is recalling its own-brand 'free from' onion rings, cheese-flavour balls, and bacon rashers because they contain gluten, which is not mentioned on the label. "This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to gluten," says the notice.
