About this deal

The concept of Expressionism continued to live on in other artists and through the development of other art movements. Due to it being such a groundbreaking movement at the time, modern Expressionism gave way to the creation of Abstract Expressionism and the production of avant-garde art.

Among the first Expressionist films, The Student of Prague [4] (1913), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), From Morn to Midnight (1920), The Golem: How He Came into the World [4] (1920), Genuine (1920), Destiny (1921), Nosferatu [4] (1922), Phantom (1922), and Schatten (1923) were highly symbolic and stylized. a b c Roger Manvell. Henrik Galeen – Films as writer:, Other films. Film Reference . Retrieved 23 April 2009. The extreme anti-realism of Expressionism was short-lived, fading away after only a few years. The themes of Expressionism were integrated into later films of the 1920s and 1930s, resulting in an artistic control over the placement of scenery, light, etc., to enhance the mood of a film. This dark, moody school of filmmaking was brought to the United States when the Nazis gained power and many German film makers emigrated to Hollywood. Several German directors and cameramen flourished in Hollywood, producing a repertoire of films that had a profound effect. [6] Nazi film theorist Fritz Hippler was a supporter of expressionism. Two further films produced in Nazi Germany using the expressionist style were The Animal of Steel ( Das Stahltier, 1935) by Willy Zielke and Michelangelo. The Life of a Titan ( Das Leben eines Titanen, 1940) by Curt Oertel. [7]

Rouault seems to have most empathy for the entertainer. Dressed in an ostentatious red dress, she is at the center of the scene and has a stern and deep glaze (unlike her bland counterparts). However, instead of attracting players, she seems melancholic and as bored as her puppets. The artist removes the shiny and lively side of the entertainment life and reveals a sadder and more somber angle. The work (made on paper) was first exhibited at the 1905 Salon d'Automne that premiered the Fauves group. It features the several themes that Rouault would depict during his future career: social criticism, entertainers, prostitution and leisure. Unique amongst modernists, Rouault's artistic evolution was informed by a devout Catholic faith. Drawing on the ideas of religiously-inspired intellectuals of his time, Rouault looked towards symbolism and primary colors to express the core values of Catholicism; a highly unfashionable (and single-minded) worldview when one considers the progressive milieu in which he was working. In both Europe and East Asia in the early 20th century, some artists began to do the whole process themselves. In Japan, this movement was called sōsaku-hanga ( 創作版画, creative prints), as opposed to shin-hanga ( 新版画, new prints), a movement that retained traditional methods. In the West, many artists used the easier technique of linocut instead. Her focal points of interest in art history encompass profiling specific artists and art movements, as it is these areas where she is able to really dig deep into the rich narrative of the art world. Additionally, she particularly enjoys exploring the different artistic styles of the 20 th century, as well as the important impact that female artists have had on the development of art history. German Expressionism can be difficult to define, as it existed as a cultural movement that sought to rebel against traditional bourgeois art that commanded culture and aesthetics within Germany. Thus, art within this movement was not easily distinguished by a singular style or method.

Another prominent figure who helped create the Der Blaue Reiter group was painter and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian-born artist. While Kandinsky graduated from art school and is generally thought of as the front runner of abstract art, he ended up studying law and economics at university. It was only at the age of 30 years old that he began painting again. He returned to Germany in 1920 and taught at the Bauhaus school of art from 1922 until 1933 when the Nazis closed it down. After his time in Germany, Kandinsky moved to France and eventually passed away at the age of 77. The term ‘Expressionism’ was popularised by several writers in 1910 including Czech art historian Antonin Matejcek and German art critic Herwarth Walden, publisher of the Berlin Avant-Garde review Der Sturm, 1910-32. The term defined an art in opposition to Impressionism; where Impressionists looked outwards to the real world, Expressionists searched inwards for deeper meaning. The style is defined by free brushwork, heightened colour and jagged or elongated forms. It was such a ground-breaking notion that in the twentieth century the term ‘Expressionism’ came to describe many styles of modern art. Influence of Munch, Van Gogh and Klimt German Expressionism was an art movement that emerged in the early 20th century and was characterized by a focus on emotion and ideas as inspiration. The basis of the movement came in stark contrast with other movements that preceded it, which focused on more accurate depictions of reality and nature. German Expressionism also encompassed social, cultural, and political perspectives of younger generations at the time. German Expressionism was more than just a style, it was a state of mind. Like Marc, Wassily Kandinsky believed in art’s ability to express the metaphysical realm, and saw color as a key tool in this pursuit. “Color is a power which directly influences the soul,” he wrote in his seminal treatise On the Spiritual in Art (1911), also penned the same year Der Blaue Reiter was established. The text outlines a new approach to artmaking based on the fusion of abstract forms and color symbolism—both, he asserted, had the “power of inner suggestion.” For instance, he thought blue stimulated spirituality, while yellow had the power to disturb. By the time its 1916 ban on imports on foreign film was lifted, Germany had become a part of the international film industry. [3] Kopf / Kristus (Wittek 121, Schapire 208). Original woodcut, 1918. Though the Japanese influence was reflected in many artistic media, including painting, it did lead to a revival of the woodcut in Europe, which had been in danger of extinction as a serious art medium. Most of the artists above, except for Félix Vallotton and Paul Gauguin, in fact used lithography, especially for coloured prints. German silent cinema was arguably far ahead of Hollywood during the same period. [8] Cinema outside Germany benefited both from the emigration of German film makers and from German expressionist developments in style and technique that were apparent on the screen. The new look and techniques impressed other contemporary film makers, artists and cinematographers, and they began to incorporate the new style into their work.
