About this deal

On the flip side of the wheel are two plastic shifters. These don’t quite feel as positive to use as the magnetic shifters on other Fanatec steering wheels. And the rubberised hand grip doesn’t quite feel as nice as the grip on the T-GT II. You can think of it as the equivalent to a screen resolution change if you like. A movie is not made better by being shown at 4K rather than 480p DVD quality, but the experience of watching it is still more enjoyable. A Thrustmaster T150 will indicate when your car is about to lose traction just like a T-GT, but the way this is relayed is subtler and more detailed.

Surrounding this are a series of push buttons, each labelled with its corresponding PlayStation label. There are also four rotary encoders which all work perfectly in Gran Turismo 7. During use, these rotary encoders were really useful for selecting different inputs while driving. It’s a three-pedal board with metal footplates and a large plastic footrest. You can adjust the position of the pedals a little, and screw in an included “conical” mod for the brake that adds a progressive feel with a rubber add-on. As a result, the Hori is also much lighter than any other wheel here. You’ll still need something to clamp it to, but this is the one wheel here that won’t seem hard done by if it’s not treated to a proper frame or wheel stand. When looking at the technology and strength, Fanatec has a slight advantage with the direct drive GT DD Pro. It features better internal technology with the larger direct drive motor, which is capable of more force. The exterior of the steering wheel part itself is also all-plastic, without the metal parts that make these wheels seem a bit less toy-like. There's still sports car-like metal spoke shifters behind the wheel, though. T-F.O.C. technology that allows the motor to respond dynamically and swiftly to requests for increased torque, while reducing drops in power.

Mid-range racing wheels sit just slightly beyond budget racing wheels in terms of price and performance. And they often offer something slightly above an entry-level wheel would. However, racing wheels and bundles within this category can’t be too expensive otherwise they risk falling in with other premium racing wheels. The levels of fun, realism and immersion are all increased when you start racing with a sim racing wheel. With a wheel and pedals, you get a much greater level of control in most situations, and you can really start to feel how your car is behaving with the road. On PC, the USB selector switch on the T-GT racing wheel’s base must always be set to the OTHER position! PC Popular sim racing brand MOZA Racing does have some mid-range racing wheels which would be perfect for this comparison. However, none of MOZA’s current racing wheels are PS5 compatible. Next, I’ll look at Fanatec’s Gran Turismo steering wheel, and this is normally an area where the German sim racing brand excels. This steering wheel was however designed by Polyphony Digital to look like a Gran Turismo wheel. How to wake your T-GT racing wheel if it is no longer recognized on PC (i.e. in the event of firmware loss) PC

However, they both offer relatively entry-level experiences which keep them firmly in with other budget-friendly racing wheels. It may not offer the most realistic or hardcore racing sim experience, but it isn’t far off. GT7 occupies the middle ground between a racing sim like Assetto Corsa Competizione and Forza Motorsport. And that is fine by us, as it is an extremely fun game to play.

FAQ

If you're on a budget, then, we'd recommend either the Thrustmaster T150 or the Hori Overdrive wheel for Formula 1 and other racing sims. They're fantastic entry-level wheels that, unlike the Thrustmaster T300 RS, won't cost the earth. The direct drive wheel base gives Fanatec a huge advantage that outperforms the Thrustmaster T-GT II. And the sheer number of upgrade options makes the Fanatec ecosystem more appealing than Thrustmaster’s currently.

The Hori isn’t. It rumbles when you drift, hit a barrier or car, or go over road markings, but you don’t have to fight with the wheel. There’s a little bit of resistance to turns, and the wheel rights itself when you take your hands off, but there aren’t motors in the base at war with your arms. The rival Fanatec wheel has a loadcell brake, which has a much more realistic feel. It’s much stiffer, making the brakes respond to the amount of pressure applied, not just how far the pedal is pushed down.Like its predecessor, T-GT II includes all the other now-legendary technologies and features popularized by the T-GT that have paved the way for its success since 2017:
